Amid a government crisis and an out-of-control CoV pandemic, Brazil has again registered a daily high in CoV deaths. 3,780 Covid-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours were reported by the Ministry of Health in Brasilia last night (local time).
On Tuesday last week, Brazil had recorded more than 3,000 deaths in one day for the first time. A total of 317,646 people have died so far in connection with Covid-19, and more than 12.6 million people have been confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus. Only in the U.S. (328 million population) are the numbers higher. Brazil has 210 million inhabitants.
Bolsonaro replaced six ministers
The health care system has collapsed or is collapsing in many places. Drugs and equipment, including those used to intubate Covid 19 patients, are in danger of running out.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the coronavirus from the beginning. Most recently, however, the ultra-rightist softened his tone somewhat – including with regard to vaccinations. In the face of mounting criticism for a lack of crisis management in the pandemic, the head of state replaced six ministers, and the heads of the army, air force and navy vacated their posts.
